چکیده

We describe an asymmetric categorical pattern of onset-coda allophony for English /r/, the postalveolar rhotic approximant, drawing on published and unpublished information on over 100 child, teenage and adult speakers from prior studies. Around two thirds of the speakers exhibited allophonic variation that was subtle: onset and coda /r/ were typically both bunched (BB), or both tipraised (RR), with minor within speaker differences. The other third had a more radical categorical allophonic pattern, using both R and B types. Such variable speakers had R onsets and B codas (RB): but the opposite pattern of allophony (BR) was extremely rare. This raises questions as to whether the asymmetry is accidental or motivated by models of syllable structure phonetic implementation.

An ultrasound investigation into articulatory variation in American /r/ and /s/

This ultrasound study investigates articulatory variability in American English /r/ and /s/ production in onset and coda position, and in the context of the vowels /a, i, o/. Variability both between and within participants is examined. Between speakers, our data support the position of Brunner et al.[2] that flatter palates are correlated with less articulatory variability. Within speaker, our...

Optimality Theoretic Account of Acquisition of Consonant Clusters of English Syllables by Persian EFL Learners*

This study accounts for the acquisition of the consonant clusters of English syllable structures both in onset and coda positions by Persian EFL learners. Persian syllable structure is "CV(CC)", composed of one consonant at the initial position and two optional consonants at the final position; whereas English syllable structure is "(CCC)V(CCCC)". Therefore, Persian EFL learners need to resolve...

Syllable Structure Universals and Native Language Interference in Second Language Perception and Production: Positional Asymmetry and Perceptual Links to Accentedness

The present study investigated how syllable structure differences between the first Language (L1) and the second language (L2) affect L2 consonant perception and production at syllable-initial and syllable-final positions. The participants were Mandarin-speaking college students who studied English as a second language. Monosyllabic English words were used in the perception test. Production was...

The Relation Between Stress Accent and Pronunciation Variation in Spontaneous American English Discourse

There is a systematic relationship between stress accent and pronunciation variation in spontaneous American English discourse. Although all constituents of the syllable are affected by accent, its impact is particularly manifest in the nucleus and coda. For example, height of the vocalic nucleus is closely associated with accent weight, and deletion of coda and onset segments is far more commo...

Linguistic generalization in L 2 consonant identification accuracy : a preliminary report

Cross-language perception of phonetic features was investigated via an experiment in which native speakers of Korean and English identified speech sounds varying across voicing (voiced vs. voiceless), place of articulation (labial vs. coronal), and manner of articulation (stop vs. fricative) features as well as prosodic context (syllable initial vs. syllable final). Because Korean has no anteri...
